LE MARS, IA (February 27, 2026) – SmithCo Mfg., Inc., the industry leader in side dump trailer design and manufacturing, continues to make strides in technology advancements. The latest addition to the plant, the 2040 D Soar 12 kw laser table, will improve the process and efficiency for manufacturing. 

“This is the next step in a series of planned investments to our manufacturing process as we work towards our goals for the future,” Scott Heemstra, Director of Manufacturing stated. This laser table will help manufacturing speed up the process of cutting parts, improving productivity and reducing costs. This will allow our team additional capacity as the laser is of higher quality and cuts faster than we can today. The laser table will increase our capacity by 400% through its more precise cuts and improved speed and accuracy when used to its full potential. 

At SmithCo, quality is our top priority. The new laser table will help to improve the quality of SmithCo trailers through its ability to cut more precisely to allow the small parts to fit together better. “The more precise cuts allow us to modify designs to help ensure better accuracy and speed throughout the manufacturing process,” said Dan Dohman, Director of Engineering. 

The planning and preparation that went into implementing the new machine has been extensive. SmithCo invested in sending operators for four days of onsite specific, specialized training. Operators are taught the basics of the machine as well as the maintenance, operation and adjustments. When operators returned, their training continued with onsite training on the new machine.
