How Construction and Site Prep Sites Benefit from Side Dumps

For over 30 years, SmithCo has been designing and producing innovative side dump construction trailers for a wide range of industries and applications. Most of our construction customers operate in the civil engineering and roadwork sectors, but we serve commercial and residential construction needs, as well.

How Side Dump Construction Trailers Reduce Operational Costs

The outlook for the construction industry remains generally positive, even amid ongoing global market uncertainty. However, challenges persist. Dealers are preparing for tighter margins and slower growth, while end-use customers are seeking ways to improve efficiency with both personnel and equipment to better manage operational costs. Finding experienced workers, particularly truck drivers, remains a challenge. Safety also continues to be a top priority across construction operations.

SmithCo helps dealers and customers navigate these challenges. Customers consistently highlight the advantage of hauling a wide range of materials in a single trailer. Because SmithCo side dumps are highly versatile, the same equipment and drivers can be used throughout an entire project. Our side dumps are designed to do it all—from materials produced during the deconstruction phase to those needed for site development, and through to final landscaping. By reducing the need for multiple pieces of equipment, customers benefit from fewer maintenance issues and lower overall operating costs.

Dealers find that carrying high quality, competitively priced construction trailers—supported by SmithCo's experienced and dedicated staff—makes the sales process seamless. In a recent survey of SmithCo dealers, our company exceeded expectations across nearly every category.

Across all of our work, SmithCo is committed to responsible environmental practices. Our side dump trailers are watertight, and when transporting hazardous or sensitive materials, they can be equipped with a sealed tarp system to fully contain the load.

Side Dumps Make Construction Hauling More Efficient

The main way side dump trailers increase hauling efficiency is right there in the name: it dumps to the side, offering a level of efficiency end-dump trailers simply can't match.

When an Illinois contractor was tasked with refacing the inside of an earthen dam with riprap, the project initially relied on a standard end-dump trailer—the most common option in the region. With this setup, payload would be dumped on top of the dam rather than directly inside of it. Excavators and wheel loaders were then required to move the material into place before the next truck could unload, creating delays and unnecessary handling.

Seeking a more efficient solution, the contractor turned to SmithCo. With SmithCo Side Dumps, material could be dumped directly inside the dam, enabling smooth, uninterrupted delivery of riprap loads. This eliminated the need for secondary handling, as the material was deposited exactly where it was needed. Excavators merely raked it to the required depth, streamlining the entire process.

The SX Series: Dependable & Adaptable Construction Hauling

Our SX series side dump is our most widely used construction trailer, offering numerous axle configurations to suit different applications. Its one-piece, round-bottom tub is designed for maximum efficiency, allowing material to discharge cleanly and completely without the buildup often associated with flat-bottom or wedge-style trailers. Because the load exits smoothly, there is no need to pull the tub back through previously dumped material.

In addition to our standard construction trailers, we engineer custom trailers to meet specific operational needs. We frequently design specialized axle configurations to comply with state bridge laws while maximizing payload capacity. We can also integrate components customers already use on existing equipment—such as axles, suspensions, tires and wheels—helping reduce the need for additional replacement parts inventory. Lighting and paint can also be customized to align with company branding and visual identity standards.
