The maintenance crew at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport in Manitoba are charged with keeping operations running smoothly, despite difficult winter weather. Since they purchased two of SmithCo’s The Brute CP30’s, they have greatly improved their operation’s efficiency by moving more snow at a faster pace. By adding 54” extensions to these workhorse side dump trailers and pulling in tandem, they can move massive amounts of snow in a short time.
“We’re getting at least a minimum of 50 yards of snow in each trailer, which was equivalent to two semis and one tandem in each of the trailers we are pulling now,” stated Tom Kushner, manager of Airfield Services. “We’re really making, in one trip, what would take us normally six trips.”
The train can dump both trailers at one time, reducing the cycle time to 30 seconds. A bolt-on poly liner has been added to each trailer to keep the snow from sticking to the tub. Due to the low center of gravity as compared to their end dump trailer, they can operate in nearly any condition and do not have to worry about tipping.
Kushner also found that the flotation tires on the units are advantageous.
“We got our trailers late in our winter season,” said Kushner. “The ground was already thawing. Normally we would have to stop hauling snow as the trucks would start breaking through the frost and start rutting everything up. These trailers with the flotation tires stayed on top, and we stayed on the same track most of the time. They never ever punched through the frost.”
Kushner appreciates that no special license is required to operate the unit. With The Brute CP30’s, the whole snow removal operation changed from five or six people down to only two.
“It is a solid unit,” said Kushner, “and it is helping out tremendously.”
