SX3 white and black

Needed for the Task

  • Portable Trailer Scale
  • Evenly Loaded Trailer

STEP 1: Scale and Suspension

Before you adjust your lift axle regulator, be sure that your suspension is fully aired up.

Place your scale.

Place a scale under the rear tire of your loaded trailer. Once the scale is placed, lower the third axle onto the scale.

STEP 2: Ground Pressure

Determine the appropriate ground pressure for your trailer.

To determine the appropriate ground pressure for your trailer:

You need to have enough weight on the axle to have equal to or less than 34,000 pounds on the group of two axles, but no more than 43,500 pounds on the group of all 3 axles.* If your third axle is singled out, you MAY be limited to 9,000 pounds of ground pressure on that axle. Be sure to check your vin tag for your axle regulations.

Weights required can vary depending on trailer model.

*For spread tri-axle configurations in most states. Be sure to check your vin tag for the accurate regulations for your axle.

If you need assistance determining the appropriate ground pressure for your trailer, please call your sales representative or SmithCo directly at 800-779-8099.

STEP 3: Adjust Regulator

Using the dial on the regulator (Found next to the dump knob), rotate clockwise until you reach your desired amount of pressure. You know you have reached the proper amount of ground pressure on the scale. Usually between 9,000 and 11,000 pounds on the scale. Be sure to check your vin tag if you are unsure.

STEP 4: Set Regulator

Lock your regulator.

To lock your regulator, push the locking collar in.

With your down axle, you are now able to actuate the third axle lift from the cab of your tractor.
